When you're faced with a moment to stand for Christ and His Church, which kind of Catholic will you be? Will you stay strong through difficult times, or will you be like those who welcomed Jesus with praise on Palm Sunday, only to abandon Him by Good Friday? We need to decide now what kind of Catholics we'll be – before our faith is truly tested
We often imagine ourselves as heroes of the past. "If I had lived back then," we think, "I would have been among the faithful defending the Church." But would we really? When the disciples who lived with Jesus for three years ran away in fear, would you and I have been any braver?
The battles we face today are perhaps even more challenging – they're hidden and subtle. Today's enemies don't wear visible uniforms. They come disguised as tolerance, progress, and even compassion. Modern persecution rarely spills blood. Instead, it isolates believers socially, mocks their convictions, and pressures them to compromise "just a little."
During His time on earth, Our Lord showed us the perfect example. He was the perfect King as He entered Jerusalem, receiving praise with royal dignity. Yet this same King would soon wear a crown of thorns.
Professor Plinio Corrêa de Oliveira, the great Brazilian Catholic thinker, gives us important guidance on this:
“...Never mind that other people do not fulfill their duty: Let us fulfill our own. And after having done everything possible–the word “everything” means absolutely everything and not just “a little” or “a lot”–let us brace ourselves to face the coming avalanche. Even if the Church herself appears to be devastated by the wolves of heresy, She is immortal. She will swim over the waters of the deluge. And it is from her sacred bosom that the men who will found the civilization of tomorrow, will come out after the storm just as Noah from the Ark.”“But this is where some Catholics do not want to arrive. Like the Jews, they only understand Christ on a throne of glory. They are faithful to Him only on days resembling Palm Sunday, when the crowd acclaims Him and covers His path with their garments. To them, Christ must be an earthly King. He must constantly dominate the world. And if the impiety of men reduces Him for some time from King to Crucified, from Sovereign to Victim ,then they will no longer have anything to do with Him.”
This is where two dangerous types of Catholics reveal themselves.
First are the "Palm Sunday Catholics" – those who love the Church in her moments of triumph and worldly success. They attend Mass when it's convenient, pray when they want something, and proudly identify as Catholic when it brings social advantages. But when the Church is mocked and scorned, they scatter like the disciples on Good Friday.
Have you noticed how some people proudly wear their Catholicism when it's fashionable, but become silent when defending Church teaching might cost them something? That's the Palm Sunday Catholic.
The second dangerous type are what Professor Plinio calls the "catacombalists." These Catholics believe it's natural for the Church to suffer persecution while they remain comfortable and inactive. They lament how terrible things have become, yet do nothing to change it.
"We must not be unfaithful disciples," warns Professor Plinio, "facing the Savior's pains with drowsiness, indifference and cowardice. This would be a reason for our eternal damnation."
These Catholics have forgotten that our faith demands action. Christ didn't merely feel sorry for humanity; He sacrificed Himself. Similarly, we're called not just to lament the world's condition but to work tirelessly for its conversion.
Think about the early martyrs who faced wild beasts rather than offer even a pinch of incense to false gods. Consider the missionaries who traveled to distant lands knowing they might never return. Remember the saints who endured ridicule, persecution, and even death rather than compromise.
They didn't just passively accept suffering; they actively confronted evil with prayer, sacrifice, and apostolic zeal.
