Dreamcatcher 11th Annual Gala Lifetime Achievement Award - Rickey Medlocke

DREAMCATCHER AWARD WINNER 2015
LIFETIME ACHIEVEMENT | Rickey Medlocke

Rickey Medlocke, a Sioux Indian, was born on February 17, 1950, in Jacksonville, Florida. His father, Shorty Medlocke, was a well-known
Delta blues musician. As a three- to five year-old, Rickey accompanied
Shorty on the air and at live shows. Through this early exposure to music and over time his natural musical talents would only grow. Rickey’s love of music and performing pushed him to excel not only at the banjo, guitar, and drums but a variety of instruments including the mandolin, dobro, keyboards and particularly the guitar. In addition to his playing abilities, Rickey has been gifted with a melodic singing voice. As a teenager Rickey formed a band, naming it Blackfoot in honour of his Native American heritage. They were a southern hard rock band, which helped them to stand out in a growing rock universe. They toured the world incessantly. Spurred on by hit singles like Train Train, Highway Song and Fly Away, Blackfoot sold five million records throughout their career. Medlocke also grew up with the members of Lynyrd Skynyrd, becoming lead guitarist and one of the primary songwriters for the band. With almost 40 million albums sold worldwide, the band was inducted into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame in 2006; in 2008 Rickey was inducted into the Native American Hall of Fame. He is currently working on a book about his music career and on a new solo album.
