Dornier 17 Wreck & Crew Still in British Field
A German Dornier 17 bomber was shot down over the small Essex village of Langenhoe on 3 September 1940, close to my home town of Colchester. Probably uniquely in the UK, 77 years later three members of the plane's crew are still believed to be inside the Dornier's wreck, which remains buried inside a huge crater in the beautiful Essex countryside.
The story of how this plane was brought down and how the crew were never recovered is a fascinating tale from the Battle of Britain from a corner of England that was in the front line in 1940. Enjoy.
