Lake Nyos

In 1986, Cameroon’s Lake Nyos released a massive cloud of carbon dioxide in the middle of the night. The invisible gas rolled into nearby valleys, pushed out oxygen, and silently suffocated entire villages. About 1,700–1,800 people and 3,500 animals died. Scientists later found the lake had been trapping CO₂ deep underwater until it suddenly erupted in a rare event called a limnic eruption. Today, pipes vent the gas safely to prevent it from ever happening again.
