Smiley’s Flea Market Turns 40 | Vendors reflect on community, connection and fun

Macon’s beloved weekend destination, Smiley’s Flea Market, is turning 40, and for vendors and visitors alike, it’s about more than just bargains.

For longtime vendor Joe Berry, the flea market filled a void after retiring from a 44-year retail career.

"It’s something that helps fill that void from being in retail so long and being able to talk to other people that love the same thing," Berry said. "You're not getting rich off of this, but you sure have a lot of fun with it."

Berry said shoppers often travel hours to visit his collectible car booth. Some travel to him from neighboring states and from across the country.

"I have people that drive 34 hours to purchase cars here," he said.
