TEXTILE TALK: Made With a Wink: Play and Wonder in the Art of Paula Wilson (SDA and Tang Museum)
Paula Wilson embeds joy, curiosity, and a zest for love and living throughout her art and in her daily life. Her multimedia practice encompasses paintings, sculpture, prints, textiles, collages, and videos, with different media often intermixed in a single work. Challenging the separations between art and everyday living, she uses the same techniques and materials to make art for viewing as for the art she uses: a swing is also a sculpture, a painting is also a rug, a dress is also a print. The work further connects global and local narratives through images and themes as wide-ranging as Southwestern cacti, ancient Greek vases, West African D’mba figures, modern technologies, moths, pigeons, age-old techniques like mosaics and stained glass—often via masterful trompe l’oeil effects—the starry skies, and her own autobiography living in a rural New Mexico desert town. With so much to take in, looking closely is always rewarded by new discoveries.
Join Tang Museum Associate Curator Rebecca McNamara as she presents on the art and life of Paula Wilson, whose exhibition “Paula Wilson: Toward the Sky’s Back Door,” is now on view at the Tang Museum at Skidmore College and will travel in spring 2024 to the California African American Museum in Los Angeles.

Studio Art Quilt Associates, Inc. (SAQA) is a nonprofit organization whose mission is to promote the art quilt: "a creative visual work that is layered and stitched or that references this form of stitched layered structure."
Founded in 1989 by an initial group of 50 artists, SAQA now has over 4,000 members: artists, teachers, collectors, gallery owners, museum curators, and corporate sponsors. With access to our museum-quality exhibition program, SAQA members challenge the boundaries of art and change perceptions about contemporary fiber art.
As a part of SAQA’s dynamic creative community, members can take their artwork and career to the next level. We offer a wide range of exclusive resources, mentorship programs, and professional opportunities.
In addition, SAQA documents the art quilt movement – our publications include full-color exhibition catalogs, the Art Quilt Quarterly magazine, and books like Art Quilts Unfolding: 50 Years of Innovation, and the Exploring Art Quilts with SAQA series.
