Shark fishing: what we gain and most importantly lose by exploiting sharks

Welcome to another live session of #ScienceSavesSharks with host, Dickie Chivell, who will be joined by Marine Biologist, Alina Pryazhkina.

Dickie and Alina will be discussing the importance and function of sharks in the ecosystem that they inhabit. Shark fishing is a large industry, which is mostly known for harvesting shark fins due to the broad media coverage of the issue. However, there are many other shark products used by humans including shark meat consumption and liver utilisation in medicine and cosmetics. Very often people are not aware that they are blind consumers that create the demand for the shark products. While most may be aware of the impact that fishing has on the shark populations, quite a few consider the negative impact that the shark fishing has on human population and individual’s health.

Research and education is the way forward in order to try and conserve the populations that we have left. #DiscoverProtectEducate
