Career vs. Calling: What’s the Difference?

Do you have a career or a calling? What’s the difference? That’s what we’re going to talk about today.

I want to talk today about the difference between a career and a calling because a lot of people are very confused about this. And I hear people say “my calling is to be an artist” or “a musician” or a “doctor.” They are mistaking what could be a hobby, passion, talent, side hustle or career for a calling. And so first I want to highlight some differences between the two. Then give some biblical examples of a calling. Finally I want to provide a clear biblical definition of a calling.

#1 – Differences between a Career and a Calling
CAREER VS. CALLING
CAREER CALLING
Natural talents Spiritual Gifts
Please your employer Please your God
CAN do MUST do
Changes Doesn’t Change
Benefits for this life ONLY Benefits for Eternity
Advance the company Advance the kingdom of God
Fulfillment that does not compare to your career

#2 – Examples of Careers & Callings

Jesus was a carpenter – Career – Calling was to be the Savior of the world
Paul was a tentmaker – Career – Calling was to be an apostle to the Gentiles
Disciples were fishermen – Career – Calling was to be “fishers of men.”
Matthew was a tax collector – Career – Calling was to be a disciple of Jesus

All of these men used the resources from their careers to support themselves and others. And even though their careers took up a considerable amount of their time they stayed focused and never lost sight of what they knew God had created them to do.

#3 – What is a calling?
So what exactly is a calling? A calling is not always some mystical thing that God reveals to only a select few people.

Jesus made it very clear that every Christian has the same calling. He said, “Go…make disciples…baptize…teach…” If you are not going, making disciples, baptizing (new Christians) and teaching people how to obey God’s commands then it may be a hobby, a passion, a talent, side gig/hustle but I hesitate to call it a calling.

Anything that an unbeliever can do just as well as a believer can’t be considered a calling. Because if God’s main focus is to advance His kingdom then why would God call you to advance something else?

KEY QUESTION: How does what I do for my calling DIRECTLY IMPACT the advancement of God’s kingdom?

If you can’t answer that question, then I would hesitate to label it as a calling.

This is a very controversial and subjective topic so I would love to hear your thoughts on this subject so please leave them in the comments section, tag your friends and invite them to join in the discussion as well and let’s talk about it. If you are struggling to find your specific purpose/calling I encourage you to head over to my blog where I give 7 questions you can ask yourself to discover your specific purpose. I’ll put the link below.
