After a 12-month wait, the birth of a 98-pound male zebra was safely captured on camera at Utah’s Hogle Zoo. The healthy arrival happened June 2, 2023, at approximately 7:11 p.m. time with mom, Ziva, a 10 year-old Hartmann’s mountain zebra. Zoo goers can view the zebra foal on the African Savanna exhibit as early as Tuesday, June 6.

Within 30 minutes after birth, the newborn, called a foal, was standing on his own, followed by nursing, and walking around all within the first hour. By two-hours-old, the foal started little gallops, known as “zoomies,” which is a natural behavior for babies in the wild who must quickly be on the move from predators after birth. All these positive signs of progress were observed by animal keepers without disturbing the natural birthing process because of high-definition cameras donated by the Marriner S. Eccles Foundation and Backstreet Surveillance, Inc.
