Greek Grave Relief: Girl with Doves (c. 450 BC), One Minute Art

How would you want to be remembered in stone?

This ancient Greek grave relief immortalizes a young girl who died in the 5th century B.C. Her parents probably chose to depict her in one of her favorite activities: playing with her pet doves.

The serious, introspective, and mature expression on her face amplifies the intensity of emotion here.

Her peplos—a body-length cloth worn by Greek girls—hangs gently down, not quite fully tied. We can also see what hairstyles may have been popular at the time.

This was found on the island Paros, a popular source for quality marble, and was probably made by a local artist whose name is lost to time.
