The origins of the Irish are being scrutinised this week as a major study is under way to find evidence of flooded ancient settlements and civilisations beneath the Irish Sea. I talk about the significance of this study and how it might help to unravel some of the mysteries of the origins of the people of Ireland. Immediately after the Ice Age, we are told there were no humans in Ireland. So how did humans come here? And, of equal significance, how did our flora and fauna get here? Did they arrive across land bridges after the Ice Age, but before the sea levels rose creating the island of Ireland that we know today? Were there even land bridges? The work of J.P. Mallory might help in this regard, but even with his expertise we are left with only several options or scenarios. It's all really fascinating. The RV Celtic Voyager is collecting samples from the seabed that might (or might not) help with some of these mysteries.
