7 tips to Avoid Wasting Upwork Connects (2019 and Beyond)
In this tutorial, I share my 7 Tips to Avoid Wasting Upwork Connects when applying for work.
You do not need to apply to each and every job that is posted on Upwork. Most freelancers feel the obligation and suffer from the desperation of wanting to all jobs in their job categories.
This should not be the case.

With 60 connects being availed to every basic membership plan account on Upwork, your connects count to the last one.
Most jobs require 2 connects to apply and this translates to about 30 job applications per month.
What would you do if you finished all your connects in week one and by week 3 there is a very potential job posting that you can apply and get hired?
Some jobs require up-to 5 connects and some clients to this to see the seriousness in the freelancer who is applying.
Here are the tips I have always used to avoid wasting my connects:
1. I only apply to work that I am 100% sure I can go over and above in terms of quality, communication and delivery.
2. I always check when the job was posted. If a job was posted a few minutes before I got to see it, then the job is a potential one but if the job was posted 5 days ago, that is a NO-NO.
The only time I apply to jobs posted days ago, is when I notice that the client is still viewing the applications using the "Last Viewed by Client" feature on Upwork.
3. The number of applicants.
Jobs with a lot of applicants (20 or more) are a No No for me. Most freelancers waste their connects applying to jobs with very many applicants not realizing that the client probably has their choice made.
4. When did the client last view the Proposals?
It's important to always check the Last Viewed by Client feature. It can help you bid on a job that is days old and you as the freelancer still get hired.
5. The Number of Invites and How Many Freelancers are Interviewing.
The higher the number of invites/interviewees, the higher the chances that you will waste your connects.
6. Shoddy Job Applications.
Applying to jobs with scanty job details is a waste of time. Most of these jobs end being scam jobs. Avoid them.
7. Has the client hired anyone?
This is a very important question before applying to any job. Many clients on Upwork forget to close a job once they hire a freelancer and this may give a notion that the job is still available.
Do your due diligence and weigh your options.
That's it. Those are some of the tips I use to avoid wasting my Upwork connects.
