More information about the video content bellow:
1. French explorer Jacques Cartier discovered the island in 1534. As part of the French colony of Acadia, the island was called Isle Saint-Jean. In 1763, Great Britain obtained the island from France under the terms of the Treaty of Paris. The British called their new colony St. John’s Island. On November 29, 1798, the colony’s name was changed from St. John’s Island to Prince Edward Island to distinguish it from Saint John, New Brunswick and St. John’s in Newfoundland. Prince Edward Island was named after Prince Edward, who was the fourth son of King George III and the father of Queen Victoria.

2. In September 1864, Prince Edward Island hosted the Charlottetown Conference, which was the first meeting in the process leading to the Quebec Resolutions and the creation of Canada in 1867. By hosting this conference, PEI is labeled as the “Birthplace of Confederation“ although PEI did not join the Canada Confederation until six years later on July 1, 1873. It was only after the Canadian government agreed to assume the colony’s extensive railway debts that Prince Edward Island became the seventh Canadian province.

3. Charlottetown, the capital of Prince Edward Island, was named after Queen Charlotte, the wife of King George III.

4. Prince Edward Island is famous for the deep red sand. This red sand is due to the insanely high amounts of oxidizing iron in the ground. The same iron that causes the sand to turn red has another fun side effect. Some beaches on P.E.I that have the right combination of iron to sand will make a high pitch squeak when walked over.

5. This will sound odd, but at one time during PEI’s crazy history land was given away to military generals, UK nobles, revolution loyalists and other high class folk. The lottery took place in the UK and ‘worthy’ people were entered for a free plot of land in the colony. This lottery worked like a charm, PEI was at this time an island of luxury and wealth. Eventually as more regular folk moved to the island from America or other parts of Canada the wealth was watered down.

6. When Prince Edward Island's railway was abandoned in 1989 Islanders were quick to notice a unique opportunity. The idea of a tip-to-tip shared use walking and cycling trail in the summer and a snowmobile trail in the winter was born. With beautiful rolling hill scenery, quaint villages and broad bay seascapes, the Confederation Trail is Prince Edward Island's portion of the Trans Canada Trail.

7. Despite Prince Edward Island’s small size and rural nature, it is the most developed and densely populated province in Canada, since it lacks the vast amount of undeveloped wilderness found in most other Canadian provinces.
