Albertans will vote this fall Oct. 19 to decide whether Alberta should remain part of Canada, with an option to commence the legal process for a binding provincial referendum on separation. Premier Danielle Smith says the question blends the Forever Canadian petition and the Stay Free Alberta effort, which was struck down for not consulting First Nations. She argued the ruling misinterprets the duty to consult, and stressed she personally supports staying in Canada. A referendum on holding a referendum would let the government take steps toward a second separation vote without triggering the court ruling, and would sidestep appeals. Outcome would not itself trigger separation. Stay Free Alberta’s counsel and group condemned the move; separatist supporters expressed anger. Forever Canadian petition was approved by a legislative review committee hours earlier, while First Nations and Lukaszuk warned about delaying investments. Ten immigration and constitution questions will appear on the ballot.
