Righteous Women of the Bible Week 2 Deborah and Jael with Liz Curtis Higgs
When you think of righteous women in Scripture, these may not be the first names that come to mind: Rahab, Deborah and Jael, Jochebed and Miriam, and Hannah. But oh, their stories! And oh, the glorious ways God used their courage to advance His kingdom. No book is required, and handouts will be provided. Bring your Bibles and join Liz Curtis Higgs each Tuesday night in April for an exciting hour in God’s Word.
Week 2 Discussion Questions:
1. When Deborah is introduced in Judges 4:4-5, what three titles or roles does she
have, and what might each one reveal about her?
According to 1 Samuel 16:7, when it comes to choosing a leader, “People look at
the outward appearance, but the Lord looks at the heart.” Based on what we see
throughout Scripture, what leadership qualities matter to God, and were no doubt
found in Deborah’s heart?
2. Whether or not she wielded a sword in battle, Deborah clearly wielded great
power. In Judges 4:14, what does she command Barak to do? And to whom does
she give credit—twice?
In Psalm 18:39, David praised God for the victory: “You armed me with
strength for battle; you humbled my adversaries before me.” In what ways does
Psalm 33:16-22 suit Deborah’s story as well? How might she be a role model for
you in serving the Lord on your own daily fronts?
3. When Sisera escaped from the battlefield, he ran right into God’s perfect plan.
Psalm 37:27 assures us, “For the LORD loves the just and will not forsake his
faithful ones.” According to Judges 4:18-19 in what ways did Jael make Sisera
welcome? And in Judges 4:20-21 what did Sisera ask Jael to do? Do you sense
any hesitation or fear in Jael’s actions?
Now read Judges 4:22-23. Did Jael take credit for killing Sisera at this time? Who
does get the credit for the Israelite victory that day?
4. Judges 5:24-27 describes Jael’s swift justice. Do you agree she was “Most
blessed of women”? Why or why not? Does the end justify the means here?
