AI Giants vs Democracy - Mette Frederiksen's warning to Sam Altman!

Denmark's PM Mette Frederiksen addressed this at Folkemødet in June 2024:

'Tech giants, capital, and AI are actively cooperating with political powers to undermine democracy.'
Speaking to Sam Altman, she said: 'You have created a monster.
Altman's reply: 'Yes, and now it's up to you to deal with it.'

✲ What her warning meant ?
☆ 'Monster' is equivalent to erosion of democratic control: Frederiksen's core argument is that AI is not jz a tool, nor a neutral tool.
• When handful of US companies control large language models, training data, computing power, and lobbying budgets, they gain structural power over society and reshape power itself.
• 'Capital, AI and political power cooperating' means policy, narratives, and public opinion increasingly get shaped by tech firms instead of elected institutions.
• Risks she flagged - deepfakes manipulating elections, algorithmic feeds increasing polarization, and AI enabling surveillance at scale.

☆ 'You deal with it' - core tension: Altman's reply went viral because it summarized 2023-2025 accurately.
• Tech companies build and deploy AI globally at startup speed.
• When issues like misinformation, job displacement, or regulation arise, the responsibility and social impact gets shifted to governments - 'you handle the consequences.'

[Innovation moved faster than democratic law-making, Altman admitted the gap that the technology moved faster than laws & institutions could adapt. Frederiksen's response was that governments must now close it.]

☆ Greenland context: In 2024-2025, US tech and defence interests focused more on Greenland for rare earth minerals and Arctic data centers. Denmark governs Greenland.
Frederiksen's criticism of Big Tech intensified at the same time Trump revived proposals to 'acquire Greenland.' Her warning worked on two levels - general concern about AI's impact on democracy, and protection of Danish sovereignty from US tech-capital pressure.

☆ It's not only tech giants: Governments are also racing to weaponize AI for surveillance, border control and information management. The EU's AI Act, US DoD contracts with OpenAI and Palantir, and China's social governance models show states want control too - over the same 'monster'. So this is not 'good vs evil', i.e, good government and evil tech. It's a power negotiation b/w nation-states built on territory & votes, and tech giants built on data, compute and global user networks; ultimately who controls it ?

[This is a clash b/w old and new forms of power. Altman's statement was an admission that tech outran democracy's rulebook. Frederiksen’s reply was the counter - 'then we will write new rules.'
The fight is over who controls AI's power - elected states or private oligopolies.]
