Katy Moran in conversation with Carmen Juliá, curator, Spike Island Art Centre, Bristol, recorded on April 17, 2023 at 12 pm ET.
About Katy Moran
Born in Manchester in 1975, Moran is a contemporary artist known for her powerful and evocative abstract paintings. Her work explores color, composition, and gesture and sometimes suggests landscape, portraiture, or still life. Her ideas emerge from the process of painting. She often shifts or rotates the canvas while painting, reworks textures, and reconsiders the shapes and figures that appear, looking at the painting from different angles until every part of it works. Sometimes Moran identifies the subject of a painting in its title; other works have titles that are autobiographical or seemingly arbitrary.
Moran received a BA in graphic art from Leeds Metropolitan University (now Leeds Beckett University) and an MA Fine Art in painting from the Royal College of Art, London. Her work has been the subject of solo exhibitions at the Douglas Hyde Gallery, Dublin (2013); Middlesbrough Institute of Modern Art, UK (2008); Parasol Unit for Contemporary Art, London (2015); Tate St. Ives (2009); and the Wexner Center for the Arts, Columbus, OH (2010). Her work has been featured in group exhibitions at Aspen Art Museum, CO (2015); SFMOMA (2012); Tate Britain, London (2008); Tate St. Ives (2018); and Walker Art Center, Minneapolis, MN (2013). Her painting Black Bear (2008) is in the collection of the Yale Center for British Art. Moran lives and works in Hertfordshire.
