Fantasy sword designs - my opinion

Most fantasy swords I've seen in movies, artwork and roleplaying games so far were of the overly large, heavy and impractical variety. Too many spikes, serrations, and weak handle connections.

Historical swords on the other hand were made as tools that were essential for the owner's survival, so they kept and improved the designs that worked and got rid of the ones that did not.

There are functional fantasy weapons, don't get me wrong. But most of them are not optimized in their effectiveness because they don't need to be. Which of course doesn't matter to every collector. Personally I appreciate the tried and true kind of sword more, but it's just individual preference.
