High Phosphate (Hyperphosphatemia): Dietary Sources, Causes, Symptoms, Treatment

Lesson on high phosphate (Hyperphosphatemia), purpose of phosphate, dietary sources of phosphate, causes of high phosphate, symptoms, diagnosis and treatment. Phosphate is an important element acquired from our diet that is required for formation of many cellular compounds including ATP (adenosine triphosphate). There are many dietary sources of phosphate including dairy products, grains, and meats. There are several categories of causes of high phosphate including increased intake/absorption/shifts, decreased renal losses, among others, and can also be caused by certain medications. In this lesson, we discuss multiple causes within each of these categories and discuss many different types of medications that can lead to high phosphate levels. We also discuss some of the signs and symptoms of having high phosphate, coexisting electrolyte disturbances, and hematologic, cardiac, and neurologic complications of having too high of phosphate. We also discuss how we can treat both mild and severe Hyperphosphatemia.
