2014 Jr. Angler Tournament
This summer, more than 60 children in our community between the ages of 5 and 17 took to the local waterways to learn about our diverse aquatic population. The impetus was the River Center’s first-ever Jr. Angler Fishing Tournament. The event, which ran from May 15 to July 27, was created to encourage junior anglers and their families to explore the diversity of local fisheries, all the while honing their fishing skills.
Participants submitted photos throughout the summer of their fresh water and salt water catches from Palm Beach and Martin Counties to accumulate points tabulated by quantity and variety. By all measures, these young anglers were hooked!
Over the summer, the River Center’s inbox received more than 4,000 photos of exciting catches, from checkered pufferfish caught in the Loxahatchee River estuary, to snook reeled in on a live sand perch from the Juno Pier, to a big bluegill snagged with a worm. We loved seeing photos of largemouth bass, blue runner jacks and Atlantic bigeyes, but most of all, we love that kids and families were fishing together.
We were delighted with the enthusiasm the tournament ignited. The culmination was a family fish fry at the River Center and prizes were as awarded.
We are extremely grateful to our sponsors who made this event possible: Strumthal & Hodder, Cisek Capital, Fishing Headquarters, Aquarius Investigation and Security, Fish Rules App, Shimano, Native Fishing Charters, Florida Sportsman Magazine, West Palm Beach Fishing Club, Charlie's Worms, Gulfstream Lures, DOA Lures, Shakespeare, Berkley, Outdoor Performance Apparel, Ocean Magic Surf Shop, K Scott Art, and Loxahatchee River District. A special thanks to Tommy Schulz of Fishing Headquarters, whose expertise and encouragement brought it all together. Throughout the tournament, we have highlighted that the only way we can keep our river and local waterways thriving with life is to work together to preserve and protect them. Our hope is that this enthusiasm fosters stewardship, and these young anglers and their families take part in our local conservation efforts. That would be the biggest catch of all!
