Fungus in the Lens - Testing the image quality

I purchased a Nikkor 200mm F4 AiS from a second hand shop here in Australia for AUD$60 thinking it may be a good project to disassemble and clean the lens elements. I was prepared to take the chance - but before I did, I set out to find how much the fungus actually did affect the image quality. As it turns out, not at all!
I have found out after some searching, that this issue (Fungus) doesn't affect lenses of longer focal lengths as much is does the shorter focal lengths. I may in the future see how much a shorter focal length is affected if I ever get my hands on a cheap (or free) lens to try. (Some other people have done this and noted softness and lower contrast in the image)
