This FTP Mistake Gave Me Root Access (TryHackMe Startup)
In this video, I walk through the Startup room on TryHackMe, demonstrating how a simple FTP misconfiguration can lead to full system compromise.
We start with reconnaissance using Nmap, uncovering open services including FTP, SSH, and a web server. By exploiting anonymous FTP access, I upload a reverse shell and gain initial access to the machine.
During enumeration, I discover a PCAP file containing network traffic. Using analysis techniques, I extract cleartext credentials and use them to log in via SSH.
Finally, I perform privilege escalation by modifying a root-owned script, ultimately gaining full root access to the system.
This walkthrough covers:
- Nmap scanning and service enumeration
- FTP exploitation and reverse shells
- PCAP analysis for credential discovery
- Linux privilege escalation techniques
- Real-world misconfiguration risks
This is part of my ongoing cybersecurity and penetration testing journey, documenting hands-on learning and real attack paths.
Subscribe to follow along as I continue solving labs and improving my skills.
