Well at this point you are probably wondering if I've gone mad. Well it’s safe to say that I was never sane to compare these 2 lenses to each other, but alas here we are.
Here we are with the brand new sigma dc dn 16mm 1.4 and the well regarded, most times hated kit lens for the Sony NEX system. Now comparing these 2 lenses to many wouldn’t make sense but I want I did it anyways and lets just jump into it.
Firs thing we notice is the size, the Sony kit lens is much smaller than the Sigma but when extended out it’s almost right below the length of the Sigma. The positive this is the Sony lens collapses once the camera is off, this is a good thing for portability.
If we want to break down the pros and cons of both we have:
Starting with the pros
For the Sigma:
- Amazing image quality, especially from wide open.
- 1.4 Fstop
- Great auto / manual focus.
For the Sony:
- Optical stabilization
- smaller and lighter
- Amazing Auto / Manual focus
- silent focus motor
passing on to the cons:
For the Sigma:
- very big and heavy
- Focus motor makes a bit of noise that can be heard in video.
- No optical stabilization
For the Sony:
- 3.5 Fstop from 16mm
- heavy vignetting and distortion
- Image quality decent for pictures but horrible in the corners.
So that is the main break down, but lets get into the image quality comparison between the 2 lenses and we can clearly see what the difference is between the 2.
As for video, I'll be honest, I had more fun with the Kit lens than with the sigma because of the stabilization. With the Sigma I had to add stabilization in post which reduce the quality of the video and cropped in the video a bit, none of which happens when you have a built in stabilizer in the lens. There is also to keep in mind that the auto focus in the kit lens is dead silent while the Sigma has an audible buzz while it’s focusing.
So considering all points stated above, which lens would I choose out of the 2? it’s a head to head match at this point. I would definitely select the Sigma for the best possible image quality and 1.4, but for video, I’d select the kit lens as it gave me the best possible results for video and with builtin OSS I didn’t have to crop in or lose further image quality. I know it’s low light capability is not that great, but for video you set it to around 1/50th of a second shutter speed which compensates for the loss of Fstops and gives great results.
Well guys I hope you liked this video, please do not forget to leave a thumbs up and subscribe to my channel unless you haven’t already. The link to buy both lenses are in the description, by using them you help support this channel.
