In a Landscape (1948) is one of John Cage’s most contemplative works, originally written for piano or harp. The piece is based on proportional rhythmic structures and evokes a sense of suspension and stillness, suggesting a sonic landscape that is static yet deeply expressive.

To preserve the original fluidity in this guitar version, the arpeggiated figures are adapted with the help of open strings and “campanella” harmonic effects. The natural sound of the guitar blends with the electronics without being overpowered.

About the artist:

Giulia Ballaré (b. 1987, Novara, Italy) is now considered one of her generation's most promising soloists.
She is regularly invited to play all over the world in prestigious venues.

She is guitar professor at “Conservatoire de Musique de Geneve” (Switzerland), she taught at Alessandria Conservatory (Italy); In 2013 she released her first album with the label dotGuitar titled "Lirically Spain”, in 2019 “Untuned Guitar” with the Spanish label JSM records, in 2023 always with the label JSM records, “Lo que vendrá” in duo with the French guitarist Pauline Gauthey, in 2025 with the Japanese label Da Vinci Classics “Heitor Villa-Lobos Complete solo guitar works”.

She has won more than 30 prizes in international competitions among them, first prize: Andrès Segovia (Linares, 2018), Ciudad de Coria (Spain, 2017), Forum Gitarre Wien (Austria, 2016), Mottola (Italy, 2013); second prize: J. Tomàs-Petrer - 1st not awarded - (Spain, 2018), Enrico Mercatali (Gorizia, 2017/8), Thessaloniki Guitar Competition (Grece, 2017) Mertz Competition, (Bratislava, 2016), Montenegro International Competition, (Podgorica, 2016).

Giulia Ballaré is a Savarez artist.
