Forged Carbon Fibre Skinning Kit - Carbon Parts

The kit is available at https://carbonparts.com.au/

Forged Carbon Fibre Kit Contents:
● 25g chopped carbon fibre (cover area 200x500mm)
● 400ml laminating epoxy resin
● 80ml epoxy hardener
● 20ml black epoxy pigment
● gloves, mixing cup, mixing stick, brushes

STEP BY STEP INSTRUCTIONS
Step 1. Prepare the place for carbon fibre skinning
It seems silly to mention but you do want everything to go stress free. It is essential to prepare the place where you will be doing carbon fibre skinning especially if it is your first time. Have some paper ready where you will put down your contaminated brushes and mixing sticks and cut carbon fibre fabric. Prepare a holder for the part if you need it.
Step 2. Wear PPE
Put on the supplied disposable gloves and wear some mask and goggles if available.
Step 3. Prepare the surface
Sand the surface of your part thoroughly with abrasive sand paper and remove all dust from the surface afterwards.
Step 4. Apply the first coat of resin
Working temperature of resin is between 18C and 28C. Mix 5 parts of epoxy resin and 1 part of epoxy hardener in the supplied paper cup and add 5% of black epoxy pigment to your mixture (only needed for the first layer). Mix it thoroughly using the mixing stick while paying attention to the sides and bottom of the cup. Pot life of resin is 20 minutes. Apply a thin coat of resin to your part. How much resin you need to use for the layer really depends on the size of your part but it is around 10g (total mixed volume) per 10x10cm size so calculate accordingly. Leave the part for 30 minutes to let the curing process begin.
Step 5. Lay chopped carbon fibre
When the first coat of resin becomes tacky you may start laying chopped fibres on top of your part. Distribute small amounts of chopped fibres to cover the area. Aim for a thin even layer of chopped fibres. Let the fibres settle for another 30 minutes.
Step 6. Apply a second coat of resin to the fibres
Chopped carbon fibres absorb more resin than carbon fibre fabric. If you have used all 25g of chopped fibres then you will need to mix around 60ml of epoxy resin for the second coat (50ml resin:10ml hardener). Since the carbon has already absorbed some of the epoxy resin you should mix enough resin to wet the fibres on the other side and let the two coats of resin bond. Leave the part for 1-2 hours.
Step 7. Apply a third coat of resin
Now you need to apply a thin coat of resin and wait 1-2 hours between any following coats. Continue on until you have reached a good thickness of resin so you can start sanding. After the last coat of resin let it cure overnight or around 24 hours. 4-5 coats including the base coat should be sufficient.
Step 8. Start sanding
Start sanding the part using the supplied sanding paper. Start with 400 grit and increase the grit as you remove excess resin. Wet the sanding paper with water and add more water as required. Continue on until you reach a smooth even finish. Wipe it with clean cloth or just let it dry.
Step 9. Something to expect
Doing skinning with chopped carbon fibres is different to carbon fibre fabric. You may have some pinholes between the fibres once it is sanded. This can be easily fixed with the following few steps. Start by washing the part with warm water to remove any dust that sits
in the pinholes and dry the part completely. Once it is dry start applying a small amount of resin to cover the pinholes. You may need to do 2-3 coats to cover the pinholes. Let it cure overnight. When the part is ready start sanding the surface with 400 grit sandpaper until you reach a smooth finish. You can also use 600 and 1200 grit afterwards.
Step 10. Protect your part with UV protection clear coat lacquer
Clear coat is not supplied in the kit but can be purchased at an automotive store like Repco or Supercheap Auto. Although our epoxy resin is UV stabilized it is still recommended to
protect it. For a high gloss finish it is recommended to use 2k clear.

IMPORTANT!
● Mixing ratio of resin is 5:1
● Mixing ratio of pigment is 5%
● Pot life of resin is 20 min
● Working temperature is 18-28C

TIPS!
● Sand with wet sandpaper
● Apply thin coats to avoid bubbles
● Mix in smaller quantities when working with big parts
● You may need extra brushes & cups
● Avoid using heat gun or hair dryer
● Aim for a thin even layer of chopped fibres
● Make sure your part is completely dry before applying resin because epoxy resin mixed with water turns white
