Time do explore in depth the ThiEye T5 Pro – a 4K action camera which supports video recording up to 60 FPS in 4K.
Let’s begin by saying that THiEye again deliver superb feeling when it comes to the overall package.
The build quality feels good – camera looks solid. It is mostly plastic, the good kind plastic, and there seem to be no integrity issues. At the bottom – the door to the battery which is 1100 mah and performs good enough for maintaining shooting for more than an hour when recording continuously. There is a tripod mount option at the bottom side, microHDMI out and microUSB port on the side.
More disturbing is the hardware used – it is very similar to what Akaso V50 Elite packs – the latest edition of the iCatch v50 chipset, paired with IMX 078 – one fairly old member of Sony’s IMX family – to be precise – this sensor has been designed in 2011 and has been featured later in one of the best actioncams for its time the SJ5000X Elite, but my opinion is that it is not a great choice for more current models and was the main reason not to like the V50 Elite by Akaso as well. In daylight conditions – footage looks good; I somehow feel it is too cold-tinted sometimes; and even in daylight there is some noise notable, although seems to be better tuned than other cameras with the same hardware combo.
Moving on with Software, and exploring the menu reveals the supported video resolutions – all along from 720 to 4K at 60FPS, however at that framerate in 4K there is no stabilization possible – the best you can do is to stabilize at 30FPS – because that’s how far the performance of the chipset can go. The lens is wide-angle – 170 degrees and the distortion is well visible, especially when you shoot photos. For videos – in the menus you will find an option to correct the distortions, however switching it on automatically stops the stabilization feature – so it is “either-or”.
On the other side – some good options are available – like H265 encoding, which guarantees preserving the image quality at a smaller file size, raw photo support, long exposure, car mode, digital zoom – the T5 Pro is well equipped with a lot of very good and handy features.
As you will notice at the end and hear from time to time as part of the recordings – the audio quality isn’t exactly spectacular… And there is no support for external mic either. But you have a pro-grade housing, which should protect the camera submerged in water up to … 60 meters – twice more than what we regularly get. Which explains the moisture pads we’ve found in the accessories.
Testing the resolutions was fun, and most of the time results were up to par with the not too high expectations. Among the big advantages of the camera is the possibility to use the touch screen and the buttons for navigation at the same time – which becomes extra useful when we shoot underwater. I can say some good things about low light footage as well – especially with EIS OFF the sensor is very good at capturing a lot of details
Overall – for 119 dollars the ThiEye T5 Pro sounds like a reasonable deal, especially knowing that the closest competitor with the same specs is another 20 dollars more.
