Soul Reaver 3 | The Legacy of Kain Needs a Reboot / New Soul Reaver Game

Soul Reaver is the best game ever. Bring back Soul Reaver! What made Soul Reaver so good and why we need a new Legacy of Kain game; Soul Reaver 3, a new Soul Reaver game or at least a Soul Reaver reboot.

It’s almost twenty years to the day that Blood Omen: Legacy of Kain was released on the PlayStation One. Bringing mature, dark fantasy storytelling to the Playstation at a time where colourful action platformers were the norm. The game spawned a successful series. The Legacy of Kain series resonated with gamers for its intense horror themes and gothic atmosphere. The rights to a new Soul Reaver game and The Legacy of Kain are currently held by Square Enix. If there was ever a time for a new Soul Reaver game, it’s now.

Every game in the Legacy of Kain series has attracted high critical acclaim. Soul Reaver holds 91% on Metacritic, putting it in the top 20 best PlayStation games ever. Soul Reaver sold at least 1.5 million games in its heyday. Blood Omen developer Silicon Knights claimed that Legacy of Kain: Blood Omen sold 2 million copies over its lifetime with Crystal Dynamics echoing this sentiment, adding that sales for the Legacy of Kain was "immensely successful".

The Legacy of Kain games series is the best. The Legacy of Kain series story sweeps over five of the best games. The story revolves around the vampire Kain, his thousand-year war against the peoples of Nosgoth and ultimately against destiny itself. Soul Reaver introduces the new protagonist Raziel, with Kain playing the villain in a cosmic game of cat-and-mouse. Intense and complex, even for fans of science fiction or fantasy. It's the best story I've ever experience in a video game.

That game story is brought to life by the best voice-acting. Michael Bell and Simon Templeman’s performances are out of this world, and supporting cast members Anna Gunn and the extraordinary Tony Jay take the game to a whole new level, particularly for 1999. Soul Reaver is the best game, with the best voice acting!

Soul Reaver adopted the free-roaming game design of emerging 3D platformers Mario 64 and Spyro; taking the game design ideals of level construction and player exploration but applying their own creative spin. Platforming, combat and puzzle-solving still make up the heart of the gameplay in Soul Reaver, but they don’t feel like they’re lifted out of a kids game. The gothic architecture with its ancient stone pillars and crumbling strongholds demarcated Soul Reaver from the crowd of colourful platformers. Nosgoth feels real; it has a history and is as much a character as Kain or Raziel. Soul Reaver pushed the limits of the PS1 in order to deliver not just a strong contender for the 3D platform genre, but to generate a world rich with detail. So Soul Reaver is the best game, because it has the best-looking level design (you can see where I'm going with this).

Raziel’s unique ability to shift between the physical and material realms gave the Soul Reaver game series a unique core gameplay loop. The differences between these two realms became part of the puzzle-solving experience; parts of the game only becoming accessible after shifting between realms. This shifting mechanic came from a concept Crystal Dynamics were developing, called Shifter. Amy Hennig merged the Shifter game concept into the Legacy of Kain storyline and Soul Reaver was born. Crystal Dynamics began developing the new Soul Reaver game, utilising their own cutting-edge technical developments; morphing the environment in real-time, streaming data directly from the CD which functionally removed loading times altogether. Soul Reaver is the best game ever. Amy Hennig is brilliant and the gameplay and in-house technology is probably still the biggest achievement on the PS1.

Long-running titles like Zelda and Final Fantasy are linked by an overarching story and the commonality of the world-building. Games like Darksiders and Castlevania: Lords of Shadow owe a small debt to Soul Reaver, and prove there’s a lucrative market for modern horror-themed platformers. Crystal Dynamics have been showing us for years that they still have love for a new Soul Reaver game and we know they’re good at rebooting a franchise back from the dead.

One more time. It's my opinion that Soul Reaver is the best game ever. Bring back Soul Reaver 3, a new Soul Reaver game or Legacy of Kain reboot.
