#MONOLOGUEMONDAY Week #20 PAGAN from SKIN by MARGARET MASCARENHAS.
#monolgouemonday Week #20 This will be my last posting (for this "Season"?). I had a wonderful run posting a new monologue a week for 20 weeks straight. Some classic, some contemporary, drama, comedy as well as original! I end this endeavor with an adaptation I am working on- from the novel SKIN by author Margaret Mascarenhas. With original music by my partner A.J. Briggs again this week!
This opening monologue is told by Pagan, the heroine with an ironic name given by her grandmother. She sets the dramatic tone of the twisted tale that will unfold about a little girl originally from Goa, India. "After her grandmother's stroke, Pagan, an American journalist and cross cultural hybrid, flies to Goa, India. As Pagan digs into her family history, she discovers, to her horror, that her ancestors made their fortune in the African slave trade. After centuries of these disturbing facts lying buried, Pagan uncovers her true identity AND the secrets of her heritage that lie under her skin. An engrossing tapestry of diasporic tales by women, spanning three continents and several generations, Skin ultimately tells the story of the magical bond between Mothers and Daughters."
I was lucky to have been granted the rights by the now late author. After reading the book I knew I had to bring this disturbing yet historically accurate tale to the screen. The racism against darker skin, woven into Indian culture, highlights the European bloodlines, but tries to cover the lineage from Africa that came from a thriving slave trade years ago. This story both educates and fascinates.
