Nawumul (Canoe) – A Funeral Song by Manuel Dhurrkay
Listen: https://ManuelDhurrkay.lnk.to/Nawumul

After forming the renowned Saltwater Band in 1996 with his long-term musical partner, co-writer and collaborator, the late Gurrumul Yunupingu, Manuel Dhurrkay debuts as a solo artist with Nawumul (Canoe).

Originally written and performed for the funeral of legendary Elcho Island Soft Sands Band singer Big Frank Garrawitja, the song is a means honouring the departed and the legacy left behind as an inspiration for future Elcho Island bands such as Saltwater.

The song features backing vocals by Dhurrkay’s long-term musical partner, co-writer and collaborator, the late Gurrumul.

In Nawumul, Dhurrkay sings of the deceased moving towards a tamarind tree on the sacred soft sands beach. The tamarind tree being a reminder of the first point of contact, trade and relationships with Makassans prior to European settlement. Through the song, we see the memory of the departed getting smaller and smaller as they disappear upon the horizon.
