Aapravasi Ghat, Mauritius. The history of indentured labour.

The story of indentured labour is the story that ended slavery in the British Empire. At the UNESCO world heritage site of Aapravasi Ghat (means immigration shore) in Port Louis they have an interpretation centre that will teach you what happened. It is called the great experiment and it work to stop slavery. The site is amazing and a must visit if you can. Take the tour, there is so much information to take in. In the end 460 000 people moved through Aapravasi Ghat, and most remained in Mauritius and became 70% of the Mauritians.

These people were from all over the world. Mostly from India, Madagascar, Mozambique, Kenya, Malaysia, Philippines, Sri Lanka, Yemen, Sudan and hundreds from slave ships.
