Join us as we take you on a trip to Kandy, Sri Lanka.

Kandy is one of the largest cities in this South Asian island country. It doubles as an administrative and spiritual center thanks to the Temple of the Sacred Tooth Relic (one of the most sacred places of worship in the Buddhist world).

Dedicated to the Sacred Tooth of the Buddha, this temple is the main reason why Kandy was declared a world heritage site by UNESCO in 1988.

Our journey to Kandy from Colombo took a few hours and included some stunning panoramic views. When we finally arrived at our destination, the long drive was totally worth it!

We found a gorgeous place to stay up in the hills above Kandy called Jungle Tide. The owners, Sally and Jerry, welcomed us with a delicious dinner made of different curries that we absolutely loved and enjoyed.

After a good night's sleep, we were ready to start our day. Inspired by the wonderful sunny weather and gorgeous surroundings, we enjoyed a yummy breakfast and took a walking tour of the estate. The beautiful sounds of the jungle in combination with the breathtaking vistas painted a picture of Heaven on Earth.

After completing our tour we caught a shuttle into Kandy.

Our first stop was the Royal Botanical Gardens which offered lovely nature and a perfect escape from all the hustle and bustle in the city. We even saw Indian Flying Foxes which are one of the largest types of bats in the world.

Then we visited the nearby New Ranweli Spice Garden, a place to see, smell, feel and touch Sri Lankan spices. We loved the cinnamon tree bark which was sweet and reminded us of a Canadian candy called Cinnamon Hearts.

We also learned Sri Lanka is all about natural medicine. The guide gave us a presentation of some of their ointments and tinctures made with locally produced spices that are used for treating everything from psoriasis and arthritis to bellyaches and hair loss.

We really loved all the bold intoxicating smells and grabbed a few items at their spice boutique on our way out.

Next, we headed to the most visited place in town, the Temple of the Sacred Tooth. Inside, we were greeted by some kind Sri Lankans who treated us to a delicious ginger tea and taught us more about their faith. As the site was much larger than we expected, we decided to return again the following day.

On our way back to Jungle Tide, we decided to stop and get some wine to have with dinner, but shopping for alcohol in Sri Lanka was an experience in itself as you’ll see in the video!

Back at the house, we had another finger-licking dinner with Sally and Jerry.
