"Avi Loeb is a clout chaser" - Dr. Wright
Penn State astrophysicist Jason Wright just published a devastating takedown of Harvard professor Avi Loeb's alien spacecraft claims about 3I/ATLAS. Wright the director of Penn State's Extraterrestrial Intelligence Center and a literal SETI researcher who searches for signs of alien technology—says Loeb's science is fundamentally broken. But here's the shocking part: Wright isn't a skeptic dismissing wild ideas. He WANTS to find alien technology. So when he calls Loeb's work "very, very bad science," that carries massive weight.
Loeb claims 3I/ATLAS shows 10 anomalies suggesting it might be artificial. He's hedged the probability at around 40%. But Wright systematically dismantles every single one of those claims from the "Duck Test" comet coma that Loeb dismissed, to the non-gravitational acceleration that turns out to be completely normal for comets, to anti-tail structures that have been understood by planetary scientists for over 50 years.
The situation escalated dramatically when Loeb suggested the comet broke into a dozen pieces. Qicheng Zhang, a postdoctoral fellow at Lowell Observatory who's been directly observing it, fired back hard calling Loeb's claims "a house of cards" built on a fundamentally flawed understanding of orbital mechanics.
Loeb has over 100,000 Medium subscribers and gets featured in major media constantly. The problem? Most planetary scientists have been ignoring him, leaving the public to hear only his persuasive voice with no pushback from experts.
December 19, 2025 is the moment of truth. That's when 3I/ATLAS makes its closest approach to Earth, and both Hubble and James Webb Space Telescope will observe it in unprecedented detail. Loeb has said that if the comet maintains its integrity despite the Sun's heat, "we will have to consider that it is something other than a natural comet."
So who's actually right? An academic war that could redefine how we search for extraterrestrial life.
