Native ladybirds released in Darwin to combat exotic pest | ABC News

An army of native ladybirds has been released in Darwin with the aim of tackling a destructive Mealybug population spreading through the city. Known worldwide as Mealybug destroyers, the hungry critters are hoped to curb pest numbers and prevent them spreading interstate. Frangipani trees across Darwin are getting "hammered" by the exotic pest called papaya mealybug. Since its discovery last year, the pest has spread across Darwin suburbs, impacting a range of host plants such as papaya, hibiscus and frangipanis. The NT government and Darwin City Council has just released hundreds of native ladybirds, in a trial that will hopefully reduce mealybug numbers and slow their spread.
