Rainy Pass to Stehekin, 4 day backpack trip, Washington

Join me and my daughter Laura on a 4 day, 3 night backpacking trip.

We started the hike at Rainy Pass, on Highway 20, in the North Cascades. We hiked 27 miles one-way, from the rainy, wet, West side of the mountains, to the warm, dry, East. We finished the hike at the little town of Stehekin, on Lake Chelan. It’s a popular stop on the PCT, the Pacific Crest Trail, and is well known for its bakery!

This is a fun and interesting lecture by Nick Zentner. He’s a geology professor at Central Washington University. Each year CWU sponsors a lecture series by Nick Zentner, in Ellensburg, for adults in the community. They post the lectures free on YouTube. This lecture is one of a special series of Backyard lectures during the Covid - Stay Home / Stay Safe time.

He has great lectures on the Ice Age Floods, Mount Rainier, and many others focused on Washington State geology. You can search YouTube for Nick Zentner to see what’s available.

**Backpacking in this area requires a permit, which is free, and requires going in person to the Marblemount Ranger Station. You can go the day of your trip, or one day before. You can check online for camp site availability, and it’s good to have a plan A and B. I arrived at 7:15am the day before our trip, and was #18 in line. It took about two hours, and we did get what we were hoping for.
