HOW TO DIVIDE AND REPLANT IRIS / HOW AND WHEN TO DIVIDE AND REPLANT BEARDED IRIS

How to divide and replant irises. Taking a look at lifting and replanting bearded irises. Whether you simply want to move them from one area of the garden to another, divide to rejuvenate or to reduce overcrowding, the technique is the same. In late summer or early autumn they can be lifted safely and divided and then replanted. Always keep the rhizomes close to the surface of the soil but let the roots fall into their natural position which is why I use the "W" shaped trench to replant. While you have them out of the ground and can examine them at close quarters, check for Iris Rot, disease or eggs before replanting. Bearded Iris need to be lifted and divided every 3-5 years to keep them rejuvenated. I planted a lovely Blush Noisette rose when I moved in only to find the following spring that there was a pre-existing iris planted - no problem - just wait until the summer/fall and move to another location - so now I have a happy Iris and a happy Rose!
