Become one of the most respected figures in Whiterun and earn the title of Thane of Whiterun. This guide walks through the full process step by step, from helping Jarl Balgruuf to unlocking Lydia as your Housecarl and receiving the powerful Axe of Whiterun.

This video follows the Dragonborn’s path through Whiterun Hold, showing exactly how to earn trust, gain favor, and rise in status while exploring one of Skyrim’s most iconic regions.

How To Become Thane of Whiterun (Step-by-Step)
Step 1: Reach Whiterun

Travel to Whiterun early in the game and speak with Jarl Balgruuf the Greater inside Dragonsreach.

Step 2: Complete “Bleak Falls Barrow”

Retrieve the Dragonstone from Bleak Falls Barrow and return it to Farengar Secret-Fire in Dragonsreach.

Step 3: Complete “Dragon Rising”

Help defeat the dragon Mirmulnir at the Western Watchtower. After this, you will officially be recognized as Dragonborn.

Step 4: Receive Breezehome Option

After completing Dragon Rising, Jarl Balgruuf will reward you and make the house Breezehome available for purchase.

Step 5: Help Citizens of Whiterun

Complete favors and side quests for people in Whiterun. Usually helping around 5 citizens is enough. This can include merchants, farmers, priests, and guards.

Step 6: Purchase Breezehome

Buy Breezehome from Proventus Avenicci inside Dragonsreach.

Step 7: Return to the Jarl

Once you own property and have helped enough citizens, speak to Jarl Balgruuf again.

Step 8: Become Thane

You will be named Thane of Whiterun, receive the Axe of Whiterun, and Lydia will become your Housecarl.

Now guards will say the sacred phrase:

"Let me guess… someone stole your sweetroll."
No relation, but spiritually important.
