Ars Musica Chorale: Elaine Hagenberg's "Refuge"
Ars Musica Chorale celebrates the culmination of its 2020-2021 season, "In Community," with the release of our Virtual Choir performance of Elaine Hagenberg's "Refuge." This piece, which seeks for a solution to life's challenges, only to find it in song, could hardly be a more fitting capstone to our season - in the face of a year of unprecedented challenges, we have found music to be unmatched as a means for maintaining our connections and humanity. Special thanks to our accompanist, Diana Hughes, and Grammy-winning cellist Andrew Yee for their beautiful performances.
HOWEVER, we're not done yet! Ars Musica is looking forward to returning to live, in-person music making on Tuesday, June 22: join us at Ridgewood, NJ's Kasschau Bandshell at 8:30 PM for A Celebration of the Stage! We'll be drawing from masterworks of both opera and musical theater to present a free concert that we're delighted to offer as a gift to our community for their support during COVID.
We hope that you'll join the Ars Musica community, too! Visit us at www.arsmusica.org to find out more about our upcoming concert, to see our 2021-22 season announcement on June 23, and to support our mission of enriching the Bergen County community through our shared love of music.
The poem, by Sara Teasdale, is:
From my spirit's gray defeat,
From my pulse's flagging beat,
From my hopes that turned to sand
Sifting through my close-clenched hand,
From my own fault's slavery,
If I can sing, I still am free.
For with my singing I can make
A refuge for my spirit's sake,
A house of shining words, to be
My fragile immortality.
Performed by Ars Musica Chorale
Brian Mummert, Music Director
Diana Hughes, Piano
Andrew Yee, Cello
Carli Miller, Audio
Elizabeth Van Os, Video
