Gear
Get good new gear
I bought my first jacket out of impulse
Helmet
Get a full face mask (DOT approved)
Gloves
Leather
Padded jacket
In cooler weather it will block wind
Warmer to ride in this jacket versus 3 regular jackets
In warmer weather it vents nicely
Keeps sun off body so you don’t burn
RIde in jeans or pants
Don’t wears shorts
Insurance
Shop around
Don't have to stick to parents insurance
My parents insurance company wouldn't even insure me due to the fact that I am considered “high risk” despite not having any tickets or accidents.
Personally I go through Geico for $50 a month for liability. Full coverage is about $100 a month
My highest was about $450 a month
Ask your parents about insurance questions
Such as deductible, or liability versus full coverage
Maintenance
Tires
If you’re lucky you won’t need them often
If you’re me, not so much…
BUY GOOD TIRES
How you ride, and the type of tire affects how often you need new ones
Rear tire needs to be replaced more often than the front
Oil Changes
Typically about every 3000 miles
I personally do it sooner at about 1500-2000
Cheaper to do it yourself, and it teaches you about your bike
Chain maintenance
Cleaning and lubing every 500 miles
Tightening. Chains don't wear at the same rate
Fork seals
Oil leaks
Valve adjustments
Coolant
Every 2 years
Aftermarket parts
Wheels
Fairings
Exhaust
Power commander
Rearsets
Headlights
Labor is not cheap
GAS
My personal costs
2005 Kawasaki zx6r $3500
New rear tire $210x2= $420
New front tire $160
Oil change $55
Bolts $35
Frame Sliders $25
Stickers $30
Speed and Strength SS700 helmet $100
Icon Jacket $160
Highway 21 gloves $40
Plasti-dip $10
Sena $230
Ram mount $60
New front fairing $40
Coolant $70
Coolant line $15
Chain cleaner, lube, and brush $50
Tank pad $15
First riding jacket $50
Mirror bolts $3
Safety class $200
License $14?
Register bike $50
Gas ??
Insurance ??
Thrill of riding - Priceless
Total = about $5400-$5500 without gas and insurance costs
Everybody’s costs are going to be different. We all have different bikes with different riding styles that’ll affect cost.
I hope you enjoyed learned a bit on how to buy a motorcycle!
