Backyard Fight Club: Guns to Gloves | The New York Times

After his friend was shot on Christmas Eve in 2013, Chris Wilmore — known as Scarface — began recruiting for his backyard fight club, as a way to encourage people to settle disputes with gloves, not guns.

Backyard fight clubs have become popular with a lot of fighters like Kimbo Slice coming out of the ranks. Now these fighters transition to UFC fighting and MMA. In areas where gang violence is rampant it is backyard fight clubs that help settle disputes or get people off the streets and into the ring.
