A beautiful barn owl
Drax is a beauty. She has very dark markings for a barn owl chick and the flecks under her wings, which signify that she is a female, really sparkle. She was named Drax after a power station close to where she was found.
Drax had fallen from her nest
This stunningly beautiful barn owl chick was found lying on the ground, having fallen from derelict buildings. The buildings were boarded up and it was not possible to put her back in the nest.
And needed to be rescued
If barn owls have more than one chick to feed and one falls they will not feed the chick on the ground and so it was important to try to help Drax. She would not have survived the winter without support.
Drax was very weak
She was very underweight when she arrived. Barn owls are not heavy birds by any means but she was very thin. I placed her into a nest box built onto a tower and known as 'the barn owl tower' and fed her regularly. But although she was eating well, she continued to lose weight.
Drax needs treatment
After just two days, I noticed she wasn't getting any better. She had discharge around her mouth and nostrils and seemed to be having trouble breathing. I took her out of the nest, cleared her nostrils very carefully with a swab, and then took her to Ryedale Rehabilitation where she was put on a course of antibiotics.
Drax returns for her release
Drax returned two weeks later looking much better. She had been given two courses of antibiotics and was now a healthy weight.
Drax flies free
That very night, Drax hopped out of her nest box and made her way into the wild. It was exciting to see her fly free over my garden.
But the cameras reveal a problem
However just days later I noticed she seemed fatigued. I kept a close eye on her via my cameras and after watching her landing very unsteadily on the feeding post, I decided to intervene.
Drax goes back to Ryedale Rehabilitation
Drax was now living as a wild barn owl in my garden and so this wasn't easy to do. Luckily I spotted her fly into my log shed and I rushed in and caught her.
Third time lucky
Drax has gone back to Ryedale Rehabilitation for further intensive care and I am hoping she will be back soon to be released into the wild. This time for good!
