How Hot Air Balloon Works ?
Here is a quick, simple breakdown of how a hot air balloon works. It all comes down to one basic rule of physics: hot air rises.
1. The Core Principle
Hot air is lighter (less dense) than cold air. Because it weighs less per unit of volume, it naturally floats upward through the heavier, cooler surrounding air.
2. The Key Components
The Envelope: The giant fabric balloon that holds the air.
The Burner: The propane flame positioned just below the opening of the envelope.
The Basket: The wicker capsule that carries the passengers and fuel tanks.
3. Going Up and Coming Down
To Rise: The pilot fires up the burner. This heats the air inside the envelope, making the balloon lighter than the outside air, causing it to lift off the ground.
To Hover: The pilot cycles the burner on and off to keep the internal air temperature balanced.
To Descend: The pilot lets the air cool down naturally, or opens a vent at the top of the balloon (called the parachute valve) to let some hot air escape, allowing cooler, heavier air to take its place.
Because balloons have no steering wheels, they simply drift with the wind. Pilots change altitude to catch wind currents blowing in different directions!
