Sailing by New Orleans! - Sailing ShaggySeas Ep. 15
We continue cruising and sailing the ICW and have an unexpected stop for the night, go through the Mississippi River locks, New Orleans, and reach the entrance of the Mississippi Sound!
This part of the ICW / GIWW was really interesting with several bridges, locks, the Mississippi River, and New Orleans all in close proximity. We started the day coordinating with the Harvey Lock to see if they would let us through so we could avoid the Algiers Lock, which is more industrial. We were told that we could head through which was a great help. This was our first lock that had us tie up as the level changed, and it felt like a very simplified version of the Panama Canal. After we got through, we sailed down the Mississippi River. Unexpectedly, our Universal M25 diesel engine overheated, so we checked the raw water strainer and when that didn’t work, we reversed to try to remove any debris from the through hole on the underside of the boat. Fortunately, the engine temperature went back to normal, and we were able to continue on past New Orleans to the Industrial Lock. When we got to the Industrial Lock, they had us wait for over eight hours at the dock. So, we took the time to let the dogs run around and work on video editing and uploading. Once they let us through the lock, we had another five to six hours of sailing and motoring until we could anchor, so we set off into the night and dropped our new Mantus anchor for the first time at Rabbit Island. Our Mantus anchor set well the first try, and held up during the next two days of over 30mph winds.
Who is ShaggySeas?
We are traveling by sailboat with our two dogs and release weekly video episodes / sailing vlogs to share the sailing adventure with you!
We've been documenting our journey as we sold everything we owned, bought a sailboat, learned about sailing, learned how to do our own boat repairs, and gained experience cruising. Join us to get an insider view of life as a live aboard cruiser and for weekly episodes of our sailing travels.
Check out our last week’s episode where we troubleshoot and fix our M25 diesel engine as we sail and travel east on the Gulf Intracoastal Waterway (ICW / GIWW).
