An embodiment of West Coast jazz, saxophonist Stan Getz also experimented extensively throughout his career. Rightly nicknamed The Sound, the highly sophisticated musician collaborated with some of the most prominent figures in the industry, starting with the deeply inspired Gerry Mulligan. A master of bossa nova alongside Astrud and Joao Gilberto, Getz lived a thousand lives, several of which extended beyond the realm of jazz, as shown by his impact on the British pop scene of the 80s. Saxophonist Sylvian Rifflet is a particular admirer of this cool-jazz tenor – so much so that he dedicated an impressive retrospective to his career. Backed by an outstanding band including Julien Lourau on saxophone, Airelle Besson on trumpet and the impeccable Célia Kameni on vocals, here Rifflet presents Stan Getz's career in distinct stages. Alongside two highly cinematic opening tracks, one of the standout moments of the performance is a graceful medley paying tribute to Tom Jobim, which weaves in some of his classics including “The Girl From Ipanema” and the seminal “Chega de Saudade.” Works created with the enduring icon Abbey Lincoln are not forgotten: such is the case with “Throw It Away,” based on an adaptation by the esteemed Laurent Cugny, and “Bird Alone,” a recent version of which merits equal attention. The fruit of fertile arrangements, this tribute to Stan Getz above all exudes freedom, epitomized by “O Grande Amor,” a captivating finale enhanced by the chords of Brazilian guitarist Nelson Veras.
