Korean Government Warns: Table-Order Kiosks May Block Use of Relief Coupons

South Korea’s Ministry of the Interior and Safety has issued a warning that table-order systems and kiosks in restaurants may restrict the use of government-issued relief coupons, potentially causing confusion among consumers. The government advised merchants to use their own offline card terminals, as some automated systems may mistakenly register transactions as online e-commerce, which is not eligible for coupon use.

This issue stems from a technical distinction in payment processing methods and has been noted since the COVID-19 emergency relief period. However, the recent surge in unmanned systems — now used in over 12% of restaurants — has heightened concerns. With the first round of coupon distributions scheduled for July 21, both merchants and customers are urged to verify compatibility in advance.

Industry players expressed frustration, stating that the government's previous push for digital transformation led to large investments in kiosk systems, only to now face restrictions that could reduce coupon usability and foot traffic.
