Restoration. This fireman's ax is over 100 years old. Unique fastening system
Hello everyone!🙌
In this video, I am restoring an old fireman's axe. It was this form of axes that Günther published in his catalog of fire products in 1911.
Unfortunately, the seller only had an ax head. The handle and plates for attaching the head to the handle were destroyed by time (or simply lost). Therefore, I had to make them myself using old drawings and diagrams.
Axes of this type do not use a wedge to hold the head on the handle, because in extreme conditions (for example, in a fire), it was vital to have a strong and reliable tool. And for this, the ax head was fastened using two slats on the sides of the handle. And these strips were already screwed either with screws or self-tapping screws to the handle.
Restoration process.
To clean the ax from rust, I used electrolysis. Thus, the rust is separated from the whole metal. And no physical damage is done to the relic.
The handle was finished with wax oil. I'm not sure if any handle treatments were used in the old days, but since this ax will never be used for its original purpose, I decided to treat the handle with this oil.
I really liked the final result, and I hope you like it too (your likes are the best reward for me❤)
There are also many more interesting videos on the channel, including about the Viking ax and the big blacksmith's hammer.
Good luck everyone and take care of yourself!
Sincerely, Max.
