Scipio Ilipa Won Using Breakfast Timing Not Just Tactics

Scipio Ilipa formation deception, Scipio Ilipa breakfast tactic, Scipio Ilipa reverse Cannae, Scipio Ilipa 206 BCE victory, Scipio Ilipa outnumbered Carthage — at the Battle of Ilipa in 206 BC, Roman general Scipio Africanus defeated a Carthaginian force of approximately 70,000 infantry, 4,000 cavalry, and 32 war elephants with only 45,000 Roman and allied troops through a combination of psychological preparation and reversed battle formation. After days of identical formations designed to establish false routine, Scipio launched a pre-dawn attack while Carthaginians emerged exhausted and unfed. He reversed his entire order of battle placing elite Roman legionaries on the wings and weaker Spanish allies in the center, preventing Hasdrubal from adjusting formation due to proximity. Roman wings simultaneously executed double envelopment against Carthaginian flanks while the center refused engagement. Of the estimated 70,000 Carthaginian troops engaged, only approximately 6,000 survived to escape. The victory permanently expelled Carthage from Spain and enabled Scipio's subsequent invasion of North Africa.
