MY COLLEGE ADVICE (theatre major at university of michigan)
hello everyone! today's video is my advice on how to thrive in college. I just graduated from the University of Michigan with a theatre management degree, and I may not have been thriving 1000% of the time but I think I did pretty well! this video is eighteen minutes and nineteen seconds of solid big sis advice, and I cover everything from mindset to roommates to making friends to greek life to joining clubs to getting leadership positions to registering for classes to choosing a major to study tips to dining halls and MORE! this was quite sentimental to make, especially considering my college experience was cut short. if you have any questions, especially about being a theatre major or about U of M, please let me know in the comments! also, I meant to mention this at the end of the video and totally forgot, but high school seniors/incoming college freshmen — my heart goes out to you and I have my fingers crossed that you'll be able to have in-person classes in the fall. this is a crazy time for all of us and no one knows what's going on, but in the meantime enjoy my college stories!
DIRECTED ATTENTION FATIGUE:
- I start talking about this around 13:10, but essentially DAF is the phenomenon that results from the overuse of inhibitory attention mechanisms. every time your brain focuses on something, it is inhibiting other stimuli, and that ability gets weaker every time you use it (but it can be restored)
- ways to RESTORE your directed attention: taking breaks, spending time in nature, meditation, naps
- you can prevent overusing your directed attention by avoiding unnecessary distractions (so your brain won't have to inhibit as many outside stimuli)
- a summary written by my professor: https://bit.ly/3g0LVyH
- the wiki page for attention restoration theory: https://bit.ly/2yZ6WsW
- more detailed paper: https://bit.ly/2ThzZ1B
thank you for watching!
