USS America (CVA/CV-66) 8mm Film by US Navy Pilot, LCDR Neil Holben.

CONTENT WARNING.

The audio is not original. The film was shot on a silent 8mm Camera. Audio has been dubbed which is not original. It has been pointed out that the air traffic conversations are from the wrong time period as the voice is female. The recording of ATC we used is from more recent carrier operations.

If this inaccuracy in the audio is likely to cause you offence. Do not watch this video. There is a full uncut silent version of these films also on this channel.

We were privileged to have the opportunity to digitally scan a collection of 8mm films that were shot by Lt. Neil Holben, a U.S. Navy Pilot, awarded two Air Medals and a Purple Heart for service in Vietnam where he flew 79 missions. Later he also served on the USS Nimitz as its first Aircraft Handling Officer. These films remain the property of his daughter Ginger who has kindly agreed to them being shared with you here.

USS America (CVA/CV-66) was one of three Kitty Hawk-class supercarriers built for the United States Navy in the 1960s. Commissioned in 1965, she spent most of her career in the Atlantic and Mediterranean but did make three Pacific deployments serving in the Vietnam War. She also served in the Persian Gulf War's operations Desert Shield and Desert Storm.
