The Siege of Yarikawa - Ghost of Tsushima

Ghost of Tsushima may not have won game of the year back in 2020, but to me, it stands out as one of the best games of the last 5 years. It's a narrative masterpiece. The story isn't just a backdrop for the gameplay; it's the soul of the entire experience.

Jin's transformation from a traditional samurai to the Ghost is a compelling narrative that explores themes of honor, duty, and the sacrifices required in the face of overwhelming adversity. The conflict between following the samurai code and adopting unconventional methods to save his homeland adds layers of complexity to his character, making him one of the most memorable protagonists in a game.

The side characters are equally well-developed, each with their own stories that intertwine with Jin's journey. These narratives add richness to the game's world, making it feel lived-in and real. The attention to historical detail further immerses you in the story, creating a believable and engaging setting.

The storytelling is complemented by the game's visuals, gameplay, and soundtrack, but it's the narrative that truly makes "Ghost of Tsushima" stand out. It's a story that's gripping, emotionally resonant, and beautifully told. This level of narrative craftsmanship is what sets the game apart in the crowded field of action-adventure titles and cements its place as a benchmark in video game storytelling.

This video is one of the many highlights of the game for me (that hopefully doesn't spoil too much in case you have not played it yet).

Enjoy!
