Kamakhya Temple situated on Nilachal Hill (800ft above sea level)– 5kms from Guwahati City. It is known as one of the oldest of the 51 Shakti Pithas and One of the holiest Temple. It is built to worship the Hindu Tantric Goddess of the desire of Kamakhya.

It is the main temple dedicated to KAMAKHYA, in a complex of individual temples dedicated to the ten Mahavidyas :
1. Bhuvaneshwari,
2. Bagalamukhi,
3. Cninnamasta,
4. Tripura Sundari,
5. Tara,
6. Kali,
7. Bhairavi,
8. Dhumavati,
9. Matangi and
10. Kamala

According to Puranas, this is the sacred spot where Sati secretly met Lord Shiva. We all know the story of SHIVA Tandav Nritya with Sati on his shoulder. Then VISHNU had to use the SUDARSHAN CHAKRA to cut the body of SATI. Her body parts scattered all over the world and in KAMAKHYA, her YONI or VAGINA landed.

As her vagina touched the earth, it metamorphosed to a stone. The GARBHAGRIHA is the most sacred abode of the Goddess. It is like 20 feet below ground level and consists of a rock structure in the form of YONI.
The stone that is the representation of the YONI has a natural spring that flows through it.

This water is sacred and during AMBUBACHI, which is the time of MENSTRUATION of the Goddess, this water turns red. No one knows why. This sacred blood is collected in tiny red cotton cloths and given to people as PRASAD.
